The Deza Festival in Dzodze, Ghana, is an annual event slated to take place from September 23rd to October 2nd, 2016. With the theme “Bringing the people together for peace and development,” chosen with the political climate in mind, the festival aims to salvage the oil palm industry, foster unity, and commemorate local heritage.

Scheduled activities encompass a variety of traditional and innovative programs, including a sightseeing tour of farms featuring unique palm trees like the oldest “seven in one palm tree” (Deti adre). The highlight of the festival is the grand durbar on October 1st, with H.E. John Dramani Mahama, the President of Ghana, as the esteemed Guest of Honour.

Dzodze’s history reveals its past isolation from regional conflicts and slave trade activities, thanks to the protective thick forests, primarily composed of oil palm. The town played a significant role in the oil palm industry, producing various palm products.

Initiated in 2002, the Deza Festival addresses the challenges faced by the oil palm industry, including deforestation and high market demands. Its objectives include salvaging the oil palm, reviving the local industry, and promoting unity through forgiveness and reconciliation.

All are warmly invited to participate in the festival, extending the invitation to residents, Ghanaians, and diasporans alike. Beyond being a celebration of cultural heritage, the Deza Festival serves as a platform to address contemporary issues, fostering unity and development within the community.
